Andromeda galaxy - m31

e._kauppinen

My first try to capture m31.16 x 30 s frames stacked with DeepSkyStacker. Total exposure time 8 min.CG-5GT computerized EQ-mount made it possible to take 30 s frames.

This is awesome.  Crystal clear and very sharp.  You can even see one (two?) sattelite galaxies.  This probably required a fair bit of patience but well worth the effort.  I'm just blown away that you did this with a 300mm lens.  I wouldn't have guessed you could get this great a shot without a telescope.  You should be very proud.  Thanks for sharing.

Beautifully sharp and detailed.  Did you shoot wide open, or did you stop down?  I don't see any coma in the stars.

Great photo.

Thank you for your nice comments. I also was blown away when I imported the photos to my computer and saw the result after stacking and only minor photoshopping. I had no idea that one could get this kind of photo with 300 mm lens. Height and width of the image is cropped only 20%.

Lens was stopped down to f/3.5.

I tried the same object with Newtonian telescope but the lack of light and poor optics would require much longer exposure time. Also focusing is almost impossible.

And to think... you used your lens to give us a glimpse of something as it existed 2.5 million years ago.  The camera lens as a time machine :-)
