caltha 0 Posted July 22, 2003 On Photosig I get lots of complaints that I've committed the deadly sin of using a 50mm lens for portraits, and made the models' faces look distorted. I had no idea it was a deadly sin before I started submitting photos there and nobody has ever remarked on it before. As for me, I don't see the "facial distortion" they're talking about at all. Do you? Link to comment
angela_purcell 0 Posted July 22, 2003 I personally have never heard of that, but I'd be interested in finding out also. Beautiful photo, I love the use of colors. Link to comment
tra 0 Posted July 22, 2003 Bullshit, a 50mm won't compress the background as much at the "ideal portrait lens"-the 105mm, but it's fine for portraits. I did a whole series of images using exclusively a Nikon 50mm 1.8 AIS and they're fine...for me. People love to pounce on anothers image and pontificate on the technical merits and/or flaws all the time. The point is: does the image look good to you? Does the image work? A lot of my work is "technically flawed", but oh well, the images look good to me. I love the colors in the photo, I wish her eyes weren't closed though...and yes I realise yu were probably trying to document the work of the makeup artist. Nice image. Link to comment
leonard 0 Posted July 22, 2003 This is a great portrait. I agree that the 50mm remark is BS. Perhaps they were reacting to other shots in this series, such as Glittery green Sphinx (30) or Frida (27), which are a bit tighter and a little distorted. Link to comment
caltha 0 Posted July 22, 2003 It's true they were not reacting to this particular photo, but they were reacting to photos from this series taken with my 50mm lens. Frida (27) was taken with an additional extension ring. Link to comment
colin_arnold 0 Posted July 24, 2003 I like the effect of her eyes being closed. For me her closed eyes and peaceful blue background provides an emotional contrast with the bright colors of her makeup. Link to comment
