Colorado: Frisco: Our Back Deck: Male Rufous Hummingbird

fred_j._lord

We haven't got the crowds of hummingbirds this year. They are therefore extremely skittish. This Rufous is trying to defend against about four other birds whereas last year we had six times that many. We think the ample rainfall and abundant wild flower crop is keeping them busy elsewhere this year.

This itsy bitsy fellow is wearing himself out driving away any and all other hummingbirds from the ten feeding stations built

into the two feeders available at our house.

He sounds more like a dufous than a rufous. While he's busy being a bully everyone else is off enjoying the flowers. But he's gorgeous, all the same. Maybe a gold necklace would improve his self esteem.

Just perfect! Color, pose & sharpness - all is great. I like the diagonal composition it got.

Fred, I love the color and detail you have captured in this little hummingbird. And as Regina commented the action of his wing is really neat. I can never catch these little critters long enough to get a shot. I wish I knew your secret! Very nice shot!

For every usable image I have one bird-butt view, four motion-blurred, five out-of-focus, six can't-see-the-eyes, and two no-bird-in-the-frame-at-all shots. I just keep shooting and once in a while I get one. This little guy liked to perch frequently on the wrought iron hanger holding the hummingbird feeder. I watched him and was ready when he did it again. They are so fast I often have to look at the review image to see if they're even in the shot.

Beautiful detail around the head. Great colors too. We will be leaving for California next week, back on the 11th of August. I am doing the Frisco show that weekend we get back. Hopefully, we can catch up then. Enjoy the cool mountain air, Denver is a sizzling.

Getting the gorget as well as the bird correctly exposed is a daunting task. This is excellent use of flash. did you use your new Digi-slave?

The green-gold edge highlight is from the sun. I used on camera flash plus the Digi-slave at lower left. You can see the highlight in his eye from the on camera light. It seems to work well but we don't have the large numbers of birds this year to try it on so it remains to be seen how well it will work.
