I placed a black paper behind and used natural light.
What do you think of the result in terms of composition and illumination?
How would you improve it?

I'd try to keep as many stamens in focus as possible. A nice picture otherwise.

As a suggestion towards further improvement I would recommend playing with tone curves to eliminate the vertical lines in the background on the left. Attached above is an illustration of the possible result.
