Working with the Patriot Guard Riders isn't always sad. Doing the

Welcome homes is great. I love photographing all the little kids

pushed up against the glass at the airport watching for the plane

bringing mommy or daddy back home to them.

Certainly the black and white use of different tones is interesting.  Some might argue that the part of the face closest to us deserves a little more light.

I like the showing of the hair piece on the right but I am bothered by the fact that the eyes are so close to the picture edge on the left.  It is an old "rule" of composition that one should not crowd the front of the face, when turned sideways, by putting it close to the edge of the picture.  The old rule was usually stated as "give the eyes some distance to look through."

It occurs to me that if the frame had been turned horizontally that a much greater space could have been provided the eyes to left frame distance.  Nothing would have been lost on top and only the dark shoulder would be removed from the bottom.

My regards,

Jerry

Thanks Jerry. The lighting on her face is what I was going for to begin with. I wanted her lit only by the light coming in the airport window.

I agree about the eyes. The problem with the eyes having more room in this photo is that the photo is cropped very tight. I wanted to remove all the other people around her. The airport gets very crowded when the soldiers come home.

Now that I think of it, I may redo the photo with the other people in it and just blur them around her. May be a cool effect. Hmmmm. Coffee's kicking in so the brain is starting to work.

I love photographing the kids when I do these honor missions. Their innocence really pulls at your heart when they see their mom or dad walk off the plane.

Here's another shot of her watching for the plane:
