I agree that this looks fake and pasted together.  The sky is too noisy, the moon appears too large for it to be shot at 24mm, and on Aug 22 2011 the moon was in its last quarter, not full.

Well it is a composite the foreground n sky where taken about n hour apart from each other with a 24mm lens n the moon was obviously added n was shot with a 300mm

Jason,

While there may be nothing 'real' about a photograph, when creating a scene through manipulation - whether starting with a camera or a canvas, there is a sense of cohesiveness in the scene that a viewer would like to see. This creation doesn't have that, hence is fake to the eye and displeasing to several at least. Blend the elements together better and you could achieve a better result, but right now the sky and moon are obviously separate parts added with a heavy hand.

This is not at all believable, moon would be tiny, but it's still a very nice 'picture' - and a nice picture is a great thing. You certainly can't say great "capture," as some commentors have, since this is not "a capture." I really  don't care that it wasn't done in the most convincing manner. It's not possible to paste a big moon into a wide angle shot and have it look real. It will always look fake. The brain knows better. I assume this was for fun and would not be represented as "a photograph."

And there are definitely, absolutely real photographs. There are thousands of them captured every day by Reuters, et. all.

Folks have commented about this image looking too "fake." I also feel that it doesn't quite hold together, although I love the concept and the dreamy mood it evokes. How about this idea...Why not insert a slightly smaller Moon but also a Moon that is not quite so warm in terms of hue? Maybe a Moon that matches the water abit more (Blue Moon?)? Maybe that would help the image's cohesiveness. Overall, though, I like the idea and intent of the image.

It's nice to look at.  Others have already commented on the "fakeness" of the look, and I tend to agree, but it still has a kind of character to it that lends itself to some sort of fantasy world or something.

One suggestion I have is to eliminate some of the stars nearest to the moon and fade them in gradually as you get farther away from it - the main reason it looks pasted in is because the stars around it are as bright as the stars far away from it, which looks unnatural.

thanks all for the ideas I was kinda just playing around with this one more just for fun than anything else

Or you could put it in the category of "digital alterations" (which it surely is) and then it wouldn't be open to criticism for trying to be something that it isn't.

This image epitomizes the current aesthetic at PN, and on that level, as demonstrated by the copious and high ratings received, the image is a roaring success. Congrats... when in Rome indeed!

Jason,  I agree with the comments about the unreality of this image. It looks spooky.  You obviously have some excellent skills.   Best to you. Larry

I agree with most comments above.  My short response would be simply to make the moon smaller - the scene is otherwise so strong and moody that you don't need the moon to "make it work" - I have no issue with manipulation per se, but I think this simple change would make all the difference and cross back across the line to where it "could" be real, even though no moon/landscape shots really are.

I would also recommend straightening the horizon line - those two small edits would greatly improve this very interesting image!

What you did is to be creative and come up with a beautiful composition that unfortunately threatens  some people who feel that if you didn't shoot it the way it's "supposed " to look it 's a fake...that's how people reacted when painters started doing something other than relegious work in the dark ages....don't be discouraged, what you've done is great...do more ! too many people are threatened by creative risk takers because of their limited parameters of creative adventurism.   GREAT FAKE !!!!!!!!

Rick, you can call this a beautiful composition if you like, but to my eye it is not beautiful.  Even though I might have critical comments, in no way do I feel "threatened" by this photograph -- that is pure nonsense.  And if you think "great fake" is a compliment, then you and I have very different ideas about landscape photography.
