Recently got back from the Grand Canyon and would like to learn how to

improve. This was my first time taking landscape pictures and I am looking for

feedback for improving both by camera technique and editing skills.

All suggestions would be appreciated. And please be brutally honest.

I think the foreground tree draws the viewer's eye into the image.  The lighting is lovely, although I would be tempted to crop out the sky.  Do you think it really adds to the capture?  What made you take this photo - the colors on the rocks I would think?  If you crop out the sky, the eye goes right to those rocks instead of meandering into a washed out sky.  For a new landscape photographer, you are off to a good start.

I think the strongest and most aesthetically interesting part of your photo is in the middle.  The bottom has a very large and deep shadow, while the top is quite hazy and light.  You might try some crops that eliminate portions of the top and bottom to create a modest panorama.  You might also consider a blend of two layers, with the top one receiving added contrast and slightly reduced exposure (essentially a digital graduated neutral density filter), and the two layers blended with the gradient tool (sorry, I only know PS, not LR).  I think you're showing good instincts regarding composition.
