These are Ukrainian young men and few could afford 'fast food' or regularly.

Americans eat more than half their meals 'out', mostly in 'fast food' restaurants.

Potatoes, kasha, (called griechka), rice and other simple carb (and protein) sources are a major part of the Ukrainian diet for most and it builds strong, but thin people, mostly well nourished without so much obesity in young people. (older people are another matter, as many feel it's a God given right to become obese when married a long time and after raising a family -- in general.

Thin grandmothers are rare, and those who are are usually from the farm with a hardscrabble existence.

Americans used to be built similarly when I was younger (as was I) but not longer (same with me).

Ironically, this is taken in front of a McDonald's restaurant with excellent food, far better than McDonald's food in the United States and french fries (frites) to die for, that rival those of fine French restaurants in Paris.

In a trip to Moscow where there are some McDonald's in richer neighborhoods and young boys have the means to eat at them, they often are already obese.

I like McDonald's (not the sauces - just the meat the bun), fresh cooked and not kept in warming ovens (such warmers don't exist in Ukraine), but Americans pay a big price for the low priced and good tasting food.

The French are also getting obese and more and more skipping their famous home cooked meals regularly for 'le hamburger'.

Tant pis (so much the worse) in French.
