You are not close enough to the wire which means background is not soft enough to not be distracting.  This is the shot I see, more or less, from that situation ... .

I agree with you I should have tried to get my depth of field right before I took the shot. But thats why I also took the other shot.

I would rather have the blurred, but identifiable background as you have chosen than to have a totally unidentifiable background. I dont know that this could be great, but as portrayed it has its interests. You as the artist get to chose.

It does add some interest to the shot. But I think what makes this shot at least okay is the fact that the angle of the shot combined with the barbed wire fence makes you're eyes follow the fence to the back ground.
