Guest Guest Posted July 4, 2003 I think this is very interesting work and says a lot more about this gentleman than is apparent from looking at his face or his garb. The "context clues" about the image are great as conveyed by the faded wallpaper, the falling plaster and the harsh, almost clinical, light falling on him. Gives me a feeling not unlike those I get when reading Orwell's description of Winston's flat in 1984. Its very moody and nicely conveyed. My suggestion is a crop off the left to remove that dark band. I too find full-frame shots more desirable, but the dark band on the left needlessly distracts from the heart of the image. Still, its very good work. Link to comment
gudermane 0 Posted July 5, 2003 Thanks, Andy..I thought about cropping the image and even tried it but realized that I like it more as it is (the same situation is with my picture Winter Sun). Though I didn't think about Orwell while taking this photo, it is interesting that you remembered him. You know, this flat in St.Petersburg yet not long ago was "communal", which means 10-12 people shared the same kitchen, bathroom and toilet. No wonder if you felt there like Winston..... morales-mengotti 0 Posted November 30, 2003 I really like this picture, has a wonderfull "pathos" but don't you think that you could cut in the extreme left of the photo, the black shadow or retouch with PS, because you lose the wonderfull perspective (IMHO) Link to comment
morales-mengotti 0 Posted November 30, 2003 I apologise for manipulate your picture, but what do you think? Link to comment
gudermane 0 Posted November 30, 2003 At first I also thought about cropping, but then I understood that I liked the original version better. I don't know why..It is just intuition. With cropping it seems to lose something. Thank you for your interest, Carlos. BTW, I like your work a lot. Link to comment

maria_s. 1 Posted December 19, 2003 Hi there ... thank you for dropping by on my pages (would appreciate a comment instead, you know what i think of ratings). Anyway, I keep coming to this shot, and finally decided to write something but am not sure what. This photograph just knocks me down and I can't explain why. I have an irrational feeling that you shot this in a split of a second without any conscious manipulations -- somehow, the issue of intuitive framing and shutter clicking became my only 'artistic vision.' In any case, this is a fantastic shot and I don't care to rationalize why. That poster/picture on the door far behind him is priceless. Link to comment
gudermane 0 Posted December 19, 2003 Maria, thank you for the emotional comment . I really appreciate it..No, I didn't know your attitude to raitings..But now I know and I will remember it:)..Sometimes I feel so emotional about the shot that I can't put it into the words..But I'll try next time :). The poster on the wall is a portrait of a youth. Link to comment
akochanowski 0 Posted December 23, 2003 oh yes, he looks like he has found what he's seeking, and at his age that's a good thing. Very engaging. Link to comment
suvi_s 0 Posted October 7, 2004 'Walk between dark and dark - a shining space/ With the grave's narrowness, though not its peace' As hopefully pretentious as my quoting of that Graves poem may be, it does come to mind when looking at this image. I like it alot. The poem and the image. Link to comment
panyitu 0 Posted April 28, 2005 Even if I was the master of lyrics I would be able to say in words anything that is up to this photo, the best I've seen lately,( and I'm thru a heavy pn addiction phase.-) ).I'm with your intuition, do not crop!!!, much more to the bone without the extra enhancing. Besides, the black strip adds depth to the alley.congratulations. Link to comment
