Overexposed: Sitting Nude(Left)

 

So - this series is a departure for me - I deliberately overexposed the shots in this presentation one to two stops, when generally I am more inclined to underexpose. But one can't get predictable. I also framed them more tightly, which is different for me.

Comments on this shot and on the presentation as a whole are welcome.

Oh, come on now, Kevin, I know you can do better than that! What makes it not-best?

Love the camera angle. Thought about doing some nudes myself but not sure how to do it tastefully. I like this idea.

My eyes cant get any details in this shot. I know its the cause of overexposing but you can overlap the dark face with any white area of body. And make the face more readable.

Love the hair. But, the shoulder is too prominent. Try covering it up and see that the hair really shines...

I have, as you know, remarked on many of your photographs. Some of them have been what I call wonderful. this photograph is not up to your wonderful standards because of the following. If it is a "hair" shot, then it could have been done much better. Acutally, it is a beautiful shot of the hair, but the model pose for a shot of the hair is very distracting and takes away from the hair. And if it is a "Nude" then the pose is also very distracting. I know, you were experimenting with photographic technique, but you seem to have lost your usual "themes" here, and you have "denied" the viewer of "seeing" what he/she might want to see in this photo. Of course that is just my opinion, and my opinion doesn't even buy me a cup of coffee, but I can honestly say I have seen photographs of yours that I would like to own, but not this one. I don't say that just becuase this is a female and I want to see her "naked" body for a sexual reason. If this were a man I would also want to see the rest of his body as well. For want of a better explanation, I feel cheated when I don't see what I think I want to see in a photograph, and that is part of what determines whether I like it or not. Kevin

Amy...like others, I have been very impressed with your work - regardless of experience and photographic background, it has been powerful. Like some of the others as well, I don't think this is your best work and I am not sure that there is any single reason why. A couple of thoughts:

 

First, it may be your intended overexposure or my monitor, but there are no details/highlights in the blown out areas of the shoulder, hair, and hand. Some, even limited, detail would serve to highlight the overexposure and pull the construction together. Second, the background below the model is distracting, a more seamless ground would have been more elegant I think. Finally, and perhaps most compelling to my mind due to perception, your previous work has generally demonstrated subjects/poses that were active and strong. These shots struck me with their passivity, which I guess challenged my expectations for your work, but didn't seem to make a strong statement as you have in previous work.

 

That said, you are doing wonderful work...keep it up....

I must start to say that I only wish I was half as good as you! I like this shot. It is not your best but it is also not your worst. I see alot of detail in the hair I can also see the nuckels on the hand, tendons, muscle, etc. It looks like a good one to me. I would agree with another post that the back ground/what the model is sitting on would be better if it where all one color. Besides that very nice. Thanks for sharing!

Nice tonal range in the skin. Great detail in the hair. Just a little hotspot though. I like the pose. Something different.

 

 

just in case i miss my chance all of your photos have a very pleasing quality to the eye. aestheticly and orginal interpretations very good.

Personally I think this is one of the better nudes I've seen on Photo.net. The shot seems circular to me. The pose takes up a roughly circular space as does this lighting. The angle is splendid.

 

In addition this picture is a pleasure to look at - many of the world's most artistic photos are interesing but do not posess any beauty. This shot does.

 

My only critiscisms are fairly minor - #1 I'd prefer a more uniform floor - preferable a plain black/dark grey (such as in your 'downlight' shots). #2 (and this is very minor) - it might be a little better with somewhat more highlight detail)
