Catalina Island Boat

jay belton

Unfortunately I have no records of this photograph.

I was never really fond of this picture. But about a week ago I was going through my binders and found it. I noticed that it has a nice balance and potential for good contrast. So I did a bunch and dodging and burning.

I think it is a nice shot, the whites seem a bit burnt out which I believe makes the tones in the photo a bit busy and too high contrast. I am also not sure about the crop. I have stared at it for about five minutes now and think I would have liked to have seen the top of the mast. This is just one opinion and I am not that experienced as a photographer, it is just a gut feeling I get when I look at the picture.

......I did a similar picture with TMAX 400 and the whites in my photo were very similar but I can't find the damned photo !!! Someone told me that this is typical of TMAX 400? You probably know more about films than I do !!!

Hi Bridget. Thanks! :) Question though. This is twice I've heard "burnt out." Is that the same as blown out? And I would have liked the top as well. The missing top is the main reason why it just sat in a binder. :) I'm going to add the original to the page and see what everyone thinks of that one as well.

This is before I thought it needed something. :) Should I have left it alone? I actually like it better myself but I became paranoid because I felt it didn't have enough contrast.

So Bridget, as for films... I'm re-learning them after a 6 year hiatus. I seem to still prefer Ilford. But I'm giving Kodak a chance. Only still seem so far only like their B&W infrared film (HIE). The windmill that you like so much is Ilford Pan F Plus. :)

No I actually had not thought of that. I thought about ditching the whole image. I thought about burning in that foggy haze. But not cropping. I guess because I miss the top of the mast so much. The crop looks good. I actually think it adds mystery to the height of the boat. I'm seriously considering it.

Thanks John! :)

Listen to John, the upper area is really distracting. Good effort, nice contrasty print.
