Another Time, Another Place

My father let me use his Olympus E1. I did not know anthing at all about using a DSLR. He set it most days to Auto, and just told me to 'TAKE PICTURES' !!!So I did. I was fortunate to have any turn out. Did obtain a few good captures. Unfortunately, and I do not know why, under 'file info' there was not any Metadata for this file. My sincere apologies.

Yes this was such a 'better place'. I wish I could go back with the bit of knowledge I've acquired since 2006, and take more photos.

Thankyou for your encouragement Pierre,

You are still 'too kind' !!!! If I had had my Fuji S5000 I would have gotten some good shots, but I was 'itching' to try a 'real' camera. Dad had some pretty awesome lenses that I wanted to try.

Once I added the 'fade to black frame' that is when I noticed the top of the cross cropped off. I was sure someone would notice, and it is only good that you did. I had no more room at the top of the photo, but looking back I could have added a border and then used the 'fade to black' frame and wouldn't have lost my cross. I shall try that in the ones I print.

You have always been such a great source of encouragement Alf. Many thanks for your visit and wonderful input.

Warmest regards, Gail

I am reallizing this is one of the last replies I will have to you and I am very sad to say this. I will miss your sense of humour, awesome space images, all the info you share about lenses, and there are so many more reasons.

You have helped me out so much with my Photography, and have challenged me in a very good way. I shall still keep in touch and perhaps you may get sent the odd image for 'critique' and advice.

Take care my friend, you will be missed,

Most sincerely, Gail

This place is called Altos de Chavon, in the city of Romana in the Dominican Republic. It is a replica of a XV1 Century Mediterranean village. In 1976 Dominican Stonecutters, Woodworkers and Iron-smiths combined their crafts to create the rich architectural landscape that is now known as Altos de Chavon.

As you walk down the cobblestone pathways, you see architecture reminiscent of another era. Terra Cotta and Coral Block buildings house craft workshops, artists' studiois, galleries, shops and restuarants. The village is a vital source of inspiration, artistic expression and those who study there receive the utmost in professional training. I urge you to 'search' it on the internet, it is a fascinating read.

We did not see any of the students, and actually the day we were there, there were only the vendors outside. I could not even think of shopping at the time, there was so much 'beauty' to see. I would have liked to go in some of the galleries and the Museum.

Perhaps one day I will get back. Many thanks for enquiring Tamara and also for your kind words of critique.

Sincere regards, Gail

Yes I am fortuante to have my Father's direction when it come to Photography. I have him to thank for his encouragement and also when he saw me improving, he purchased my Fuji S9000 for me. He has always been a avid photographer, and I would say it takes up the largest part of his time.

many thanks Sumon for your visit, encouragement and kind words of critiqeu.

Warmest regards, gail

What a wonderful looking work of art that tells such an interesting story with the bags and hat in front of the church.

The tone mapping is this photo is excellent.

Nice image that tells a story. Great work Gail not that you need to hear it from me.

Many thanks for your very interesting input on this image. Good to hear you enjoyed the composition, and found the 'story' it told to be interesting as well. Altos de Chavon is a wonderful place to visit if you ever go to the Dominican. I love to go back someday.

With sincere appreciation, Gail

Hi Gail, A very eye-catching display of photography and post processing, as you know there are hundreds of ways you can post process a photograph, but they don't all fit the bill. The processing of this image that you have presented certainly does. As always I very much enjoy visiting and reading your short stories and poems you give us. Best regards Grant....

So nice to hear from you. I worked quite awhile on this one, as the focus was not quite perfect. Some of the background trees were really soft, but this is mainly due to not 'knowing what to do'!! and relying on the Autofocus. But was still delighted to be using my Dad's Camera. Would love to have the opportunity again. This was in 2006. Next time I would spend so much more time.

Thanks so much for those kind words Grant. Most sincerely, Gail
