dwaugh 0 Posted March 3, 2012 This is a single shot version of the same photo that I posted before as an HDR. It was my first experience with a waterfall that I could walk underneath, and it was unique to say the least. All comments and critiques welcome. View larger for best detail. Link to comment
bruckner 550 Posted March 4, 2012 Nice setting, the only thing I would do is crop little bit of the top, well seen. Link to comment
stp 6 Posted March 5, 2012 This is tough lighting, and I can understand why you did the HDR. I think the water (and the trees on the other side of the water) look better here, but not nearly as much can be seen on the left. If I had just this photograph to work with, I agree with George that some should be taken off the top, and I'd take some off the left as well and really concentrate the photo on the water, the trees beyond the water, the rocks, and crop the left side just to the left (I think) of the rock at the top where the light turns to deep shadow (at least that's the general area where I'd be trying different crops, just to reduce the amount of "undefined dark stuff"). dwaugh 0 Posted March 5, 2012 Thanks for the comments. I understand everything you said and perhaps I'll crop it in the future. I should add that I left the trees coming into the top of the frame (and actually made sure they were in the frame) because it adds to the disorienting feeling that comes with walking under that waterfall. I may redo the HDR, also, and see if I can make it even better. Link to comment
JeffBryce 0 Posted March 5, 2012 David, this is a very nice and challenging waterfall (most are!). I have viewed both images. Yes, obviously the range of light in the other one is better because we can see bluish sky and into the shadows. But I would be careful that you do not conclude that this waterfall can best be captured using HDR. Two 4x6 ND grads could have worked here. I'd handhold them and move them during exposure so as to minimize water droplets. Regards, Jeff Link to comment
dwaugh 0 Posted March 8, 2012 I don't disagree, the ND filters would have made for a nice shot, if only I had some in my collection for that lens... they have been next on my list for a long time. Link to comment
