Great composition and colors.  I'm trying to guess how you shot this.  I'm guessing focus stacking for near-far sharpness (which is excellent), but then I'm not sure how you addressed brightness.  Whatever you did, the result is very impressive.

Sean, Slavomir, John, Stephen: Thanks for your comments.

Stephen, thanks for your technical interest on this one.  All my images are single images (no focus stacking, no HDR blending).  I almost always try to focus on the hyperfocal distance to achieve sharpness throughout.  For this shot the closest ice was about 16" from the sensor and the focus was on the tiny crystal on the right about 24" away, 1/3 of the way up (focusing 1/3 in is generally a good rule of thumb).  At 13mm f/16, the result is sharpness from about 15" to infinity.

Sorry, I forgot to include in the technical details that I filtered the sky and part of the water.  As I recall I used either a 4x6 Lee Grad ND 0.75 HE or SE, or perhaps both.  While I have filter holders, I prefer to handhold grads so that I can move them during the exposure, which is what I did here.  Regards, Jeff

Jeff, thanks for the reply.  I don't see many single-exposure photographs with this much range of light or range of distances that are done so perfectly.  Many are relying on digital aids to address the challenges.  It makes me appreciate your photograph all the more.

Lovely shot Jeff! I love the strong interplay of colours between the orange of the sky and the blue of the snow. Great composition!
