I shot this couple a few nights ago, this is not my normal subject type

and I am intrested getting some feedback on the shoot and the

processing.

I am not a fan of this lifestyle of pain, so my thoughts would reflect my disdain for your subject content.  I am looking at you as a photographer sending out a message of who you are, guilt by association.

If you are doing photojournalism work , disregard my remark.  But if you are photographing to share your world, consider my remark for input to your message of how others will view who you are.

I hope this is the kind of feedback you were looking for?

I appreciate all feedback, each viewer who responds has a story to tell. I am a portrait photographer and as such I look to provide my clients will images that they will cherish. Sometimes that fits into the expectations of the world around them and sometimes not so much.  I would not take the same path these two have chosen but I very fortunate that everyone i shoot is not like me :)

This is actually their favorite image. I thought it was too simple. The attraction between them is reflected in the capture and I am very proud to have taken it. I am certain they will cherish it for many years to come.

For what its worth, I really like the image. There is a great deal of contrast in the tenderness of the moment vrs. the presumed mental anguish that people associate with the self mutilation. The high contrast in the image vrs the slightly soft focus mimics this feeling. Very well done IMHO.

I can see why they would like this -- it's a great expression of a relationship.  Content-wise, I'm a bit put off by the very bright patch between their foreheads; is that a flash or natural light?  The fact that it creates some rim light on her makes it too strong, IMO; the rim light might be fine if this bright light wasn't in the frame.  IM[very]HO.
