Amsterdam Canal At Night

tom_menegatos

Used the bridge railing to steady the camera. Aperature was probably about 22. 28-105 USM lens at 28 or so. Maybe a 30 second exposure.

Pepole seem to like this photo and a lot of friends ask me for copies. It's lightened up a little to match the gamma of my monitor. It's usually a little darker but I want to hear opinions on what people think of it like this. Actually I'll post the darker one in a smaller format.

You can't see it in this but it is very sharp and there is a lot of detail even when printed dark. The red band on the bridge is a row of lights. They show up clear and distinct on 11x14 prints.

Please let me know what you think of this.

A lot of people I know like this shot. They ask me for prints of it

all the time. I have an 11x14 of this and I was surprised at the

sharpness and detail I got out of the 28-105 USM lens. Of course a

lot gets lost converting it for viewing on the web.

Very nice, indeed! I also like the colors and the reflections. But are you sure about the exposure time? At 30s, you shouldn't be able to see waves in the water, it should look much smoother, like ice.

Hallo Tom, as I live in Holland, I see lots of pics from Amsterdam canals. This is a very good one.

You Know I'm not sure about the exposure time but I remember it being fairly long. I didn't record the exposure info but it had to be at least f16 probably f22 after the sund went down on 100 or 200 speed film. I think I might have been a bit drunk at the time too. Didn't bracket so I'm glad I got the exposure I did too.

I was confused about the waves as well. Maybe it was 3 sec instead of 30. who knows :)

This photo is great. Beautiful colors and ambience, and despite all being centered, it works very well.

My only problem is the unlevel horizon. It appears that it is slightly tilted to the right. On images like this that are placed on the center with distinct geometric lines, it becomes even more important to level the horizon.

I think it might be either the scan or the imbalance of the trees and spacing in the buildings that makes it seem unlevel. I remember measuring it once and it was level. The surface I used to stabilize the camera was level.

I like the darker one!!! No question. Too much magenta in the first scan.. in my opinion. This one is rich and the color outstanding. Wonderful night shot...great exposure.. Well done.

I'm quite new at this, so my comments won't be technical. I just like it, makes me want to check out the place. Gives you some real feeling of smoothness. Like the second version better though.

Beautiful photo took just at the right time. A tighter framing would reveal more details of the streets on both sides of the canal without loosing the water/lights effect. That's all I could say because it's a very nice shot! Good Work!

is it just me or isn't it horizontal ? Makes it a bit weird.....would have been even nicer with ekta 64/velvia/provia 100, but who's complaint ? Lovely shooting, well done =)

Very nice. I have a couple of these in my folder as well but they're both daytime shots. I like the reflected light on the water.

You'll have to forgive me for making this the first ever Tom Menegatos image that I have commented on. I *used* to live in The Netherlands (Holland), before I moved down south to the place known as 'down under'. In other words, you can easily see, that I have a 'connection' to the location in this image.

I also like the version with a little less gamma, but who knows? It could be just our different monitors clouding our judgements of this image.

Certainly above average for a pic of Amsterdam!
