An Artwork of Picasso in Stockholm?

ichtys7

Canon EOS 7D with Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II and a the software: Adobe Photoshop Elements 10.0 Macintosh;
(Found this kind of an abstract "face" with a carved heart shape (in deep shadow for the moment of exposure) to the up right position from the face, on the tree trunk of a living Fagus sylvatica, the European Beech or Common Beech, is a deciduous tree belonging to the beech family Fagaceae. The low warm winter sun is flooding from left and giving the trunk a three-dimensional-feeling and showing the marks its bark (The exterior covering of the trunk and branches of a tree; the rind.) I found this quite inspiring to bring this image home in my camera (Canon 7D, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II)

Dear Photographer!

May I ask you if this rather abstract Figure on the Tree Trunk - is it too

shadowy? (Called it a "Picasso"!)

Please give your comment from what you quite spontaneously think

while watching this image for the first time! I would appreciate your

valued opinion! Thanks in advance!

Hi Charl,

The shadowed tree brings much character to this well shot image.

I had two first impressions, one being that some one skilled with a carving knife did this work of art. The other is that this is an ancient figure with much history .

Best Regards,  Mike

Charl, from your statement it seems the “figure” is your intended primary subject matter. The tree, the contour of the trees is secondary. To me that says to do whatever is necessary in post to see that the emphasis is on the primary subject matter.

True the shadow does add to the perception of roundness in the tree but there is no reason that it has to obscure the figure. You can brighten the image and still retain the feeling of roundness, then slightly increase contrast to delineate the figure more distinctly. The whole point of taking a photograph is to get the viewer/reader to see what it is that you want them to see as clearly as possible.
