Very interesting and thought-provoking. Replace the laptop with an oil lamp. Think about the similarities.

Mark... Beautiful children, excellent lighting and photo.  I think they are official members of the "iTot" generation ;-).... Mike

Beautiful candid portrait. Looks like from the old dutch master painters scene except now more modern.   6

Are you kidding Mark? What improvement may this masterpiece need? I haven't seen so beautiful and perfectly lit and composed picture in my life! Rembrandt colors, beautiful faces so well presented and as I said, perfect composition, all in its place! The light from the mouse is a final detail, accomplishes the perfection in so cute way! Congratulations, seven all the way!

Best regards!

Thanks form your kind comments , This was as difficult a portrait as I've ever tried, not because of the lighting or exposure or any technical issue, but because they are my children, its is one of the few shots i had see in my head and tried several times to setup and get right but there was always something wrong something distracting in the background or the lighting was a bit too bright or as someone said never work with children or animals, I originally set it up with Amy in the shot only, but Adam seeing Amy was using the computer decided he wanted in having resigned myself to the fact that it was a rap (as I knew for past experience that tempers would flare and all i would get is two kids fighting.. ) but I was in near shock when Adam sat beside Amy and just mirror what she was doing I held my breath and kept firing the camera :) ...

My first thought was also: 17th C Dutch painting. And then noticed the wonderful candle light of yonder had been replaced by digital light of 21 st c. Brilliant. The little light from the mouse, I agree, adds an extra "industrial" touch to your marvelous picture. Toast, Mark!

Hello Mark,

This has perfect light.  I just wonder did you use other light sources than the computer screen?

Congratulations,
Ben

Hi Ben the image is mostly lit by the computer screen but I found to get the ISo down to a workable value for image quality I had to cheat a little and use a remote flash at its lowest setting fired into the screen even though the flash was at its lowest setting I had to defuse it even more with a load of tissue paper over the head of the flash this help with a little catch light in the eyes. Thanks for taking the time to comment mark

The idea, the composition, the lighting, the personalities, the craftsmanship - all work together to its perfection - max!

Thanks for sharing the info about the lighting too. It is an absolutely stunning picture and it was interesting to read about the technical difficulties in getting it right. Super!

This was a great concept and you caught some wonderful images. I think I like this one better than the single, but it's close. Wonderful job with the lighting in a difficult situation. You kept it real!
