Abandoned and derelict in the Australian Outback. The Yellow Bus is a

few 100km's from any town out alone in the Strzelecki Desert.

Any critique, feedback and comments welcome.

This is the most unsettling image I've seen lately.  How did it get there and why?  I think this is a great image.  I might have made it a nano-tab darker.  But left alone it is fine.  Great capture.

Great photo, Marty. I like the composition and the colour adjustments very much. It certainly is also quite the interesting subject, this bus. Sort of gets one thinking a bit. How and why has it come to rest there? Why has (seemingly) so many people found it worthwhile to travel more than 100Km to this abandoned wreck in order to vandalise it with spray paint? In any case: well done on the photographing :-)

I think the color desaturation works very well with this particular subject -- the loss of color reflects the feeling imparted by the abandoned bus so far removed from anything else.  I also like the square crop and relatively centered subject; it puts the viewer's attention directly on the bus and nothing else, leaving only hints on the sides as to the context, and this is sufficient.  I think you've created an exceptional photograph here.

Firstly thankyou for looking and providing comments and feedback.

Regarding the comments of how it got there... that's the mystery. It certainly proved to be an exceptional subject for this reason alone.

@Bo ... why people bother to carry spray paint with them out here is beyond me too. Why I bus comes to be out here is just as bizarre. But like you mention it is the thought provocation that certainly add to this photograph.

@Cary ... it does display a HDR feel to it I agree. Although no HDR was used, I did lift the shadows a little and applyed some selective tonal contrast which may contribute to the HDR feel.

@Stephen ... you have provided a very accurate reasoning for the selective desaturation and square crop. In fact both are exactly why they were applyed. This along with a very subtle vignette.

@ Richard ... a great find it certainly is. This is what I love about the Aussie outback everytime I go out there. There is always a suprise around the corner even if that corner is another 100kms away :-)

I have looked through your various images and portfolios. This one is an "eye catcher", as I see some other PN colleagues have also been drawn to it, and no wonder. The scene itself is unusual and "documentary". That in itself is a great feat. Your post-processing adds even more punch to the scene. Congratulations indeed!
