I have a similar one, but this is much better. All in all it works very well, the only remark I would make is that I would have left slightly more "air" on the top of the image. This way I have the feeling that the top frame "compresses" the two a little bit.

But it is nice, they are nice and the feeling is nice. Beautiful glance she gives him!

You caught a beautiful natural moment with these two. I would be tempted to crop up to the middle of the first riser. That bottom step is drawing my eye away from the couple. I do like the motion blur of her foot and his left hand. I don't know if you know these people or not, but I'm sure they would be pleased with this beautiful photo.

For the moment I've got scared that the guy had a heart attack. But looking at the lady's eyes, I realized that he probably had a "love attack" :-)

Great real life capture. I'm tempted to agree with the others that you left too much on the bottom, but I'm also inclined to think that you had a reason to keep the square format and I'd like to know more if you are willing to share.

While I have no right to interfere with your artistic vision, I took the freedom to try a good old 4:3 that seems to frame well this scene, forcing the viewer to concentrate more on the couple than on the stairs. Just trying to visualize another framing here and push others to argue.

All in all, very nice shot and very... romantic. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Luca, Amy and Stefan for your insightful comments.

About the square crop; First I have to admit, that I for some reason is obsessed with the square format – I somehow as a photographer/watcher like its neutrality. In this particular picture two things leed me to use the format the way I did. First one of the “unusual” things about the situation is, that they are sitting so high up – that they have not just chosen the lowest step, but has bothered to climb all the way up. The second thing is, that the angel of there legs conforms with the diagonal of the frame, and those, in theory at least, binds them together and to the picture as such.

Her moving food then becomes the centre of the picture and strengthens the composition as well as underlines her emotional expression, as the moving food is part of her more active ‘body language’ in contrast to his.

This was my thought – but as all three of you points to the same things, I realise that it is perhaps too formal considerations that are not really contributing to the image expression in practice. It is a lesson that I thank you for.

Lars: Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your original composition choice. I hadn't considered either the leg angle or centering of her foot. Those are all very good reasons to compose the shot the way you did.

Unfortunately, your attachment didn't come through on the above post on my computer, so I can't see any modifications you may have made.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful portrait. No matter which crop you as the artist decide to go with, the strength of this couple's love and comfort with each other comes through.

I missed this somehow when you first posted it which is a shame since it's a real beauty. You've always been good with tones and here they are perfect. I very much enjoyed your thought process in regards to the composition of this picture.
