michaelseewald 237 Posted November 10, 2011 Holy Moly, wish I had made one half that good there. Absolutely stunning, and congrats for getting the cover, they don't get any better than this, so why not?One thing on the original though, after studying it for a few more moments I noticed the little bit of light area on top allows the eye to escape; I'd crop it off to the top of the main cloud. Easy to show you, just scroll down on the piece, eliminating the blank are of the sky a bit to see the effect. Makes it a bit horizontal then, but so what? The other thing that happens when you do this, the top of the trees end up out of the middle, and the warm band of the mountain in the top third, and the bottom of the trees just about run through the bottom third! And the elephant ends up a lot closer to the intersection of the thirds. Feels better overall and the viewer stays longer in your art- cool.Congrats again. Link to comment
richard_john_edwards 0 Posted November 10, 2011 The crop that is shown on one of the posts answers a lot of my concerns , at first I had issues with the top left of the image and the lacking of detail. That said, the image is well deserving of the cover of national geographic, it is also well deserving of POW. Strong in colour , lighting, composition and wonderful visual elements, indeed a spacial capture of nature in all her glory, well done. Link to comment
richard_john_edwards 0 Posted November 10, 2011 Just to add to my comment, I never knew what talent "elves" had, obviously the ability to decipher beauty, talent and an ability to provide eye candy to us mere mortals is one of their strengths . Link to comment
michelyazigi 0 Posted November 10, 2011 I agree with everything that was said before me. This is a stunning image, I believe every photographer would be proud to have something similar in his portfolio. One thing was bothering me, its the way the elephant is half hidden behind the tree, which made me think "I wish I could see more of the Elephant". However with the crop made by the NG, I believe it improved the photo, putting the elephant in front. The photo was already amazing and it became even better, for me at least. Link to comment
Saadsalem 74 Posted November 10, 2011 I do not want to speak about technic, cropping or composition but emotions. This is Africa. Kilimanjaro, wildlife, nature and sunrise. What else?Yes Marina,What else ? ,everything have been said and done so perfectly . Link to comment
markonestudios 4 Posted November 10, 2011 Absolutely stupendous image. And taken right in my back yard! :)Congratulations. I really don't think this could have been better executed. it is "picture perfect" ...Pardon the pun!Greetings from Kenya,Mark Link to comment
triskelphotography 1 Posted November 10, 2011 I really like all the apparent movement in the photo. The tops of the trees are windblown in one direction and the bottom of the mountain seems to be being swept away in the opposite direction. It's truly breathtaking. Nice Work! Link to comment
lynn_jablonski 0 Posted November 10, 2011 Marina's passion for animals and nature is evident in her entire body of work. If you haven't done so, please take the time to enjoy the many beautiful shots she has captured over the years. Love this woman's talent! Link to comment

richard_zbinden 0 Posted November 10, 2011 So far, well said. Rarely does a photograph of this skill technically come directly from the camera, be it digital or film. To my knowledge and skill level all photos need some development, Ansel always added development, digital shots require development if for sharpness alone. Therefore the question begs...what camera and what exposure details, or better yet what development or enhancements did you perform and with what software? And needless to say the photo has perfect exposure, perfect composure ( that is as near perfect as us mortals can obtain) resulting in a grand, gorgeous photo. A presentation that all skilled photographers expect. We throw away those numerous shots we make that do not meet these standards. Please, an answer. Zbinden Link to comment

timinich 0 Posted November 10, 2011 To be brief, this picture is perfect in every way. Subject, composition, lighting, colors, etc. Think of any aspect of photography that you could think of, from any book you've read or any person you've talked with, and this would be a textbook example of every little thing done not just right, but beautifully. This is the shot of a lifetime. Your National Geographic cover is more than deserved & this is maybe the best POW selection I've seen. Congratulations. Link to comment
