I really liked the composition of the bird here, great captured moment, but the one problem is that the eye is completely gone. I realize more exposure would lose some detail in the white areas, but I guess it's just my opinion that the eye is the window to the soul and a wildlife picture without it seems to be lacking that which makes it alive. Very nice shot though, keep experimenting on the exposure and you may end up with a better one. I live a few beach cities away from Bolsa Chica, great place for bird shots.

Actually, you can see the eye of the bird in a bigger picture. However, this pic was cropped to upload here and besides, the eye is as black as the head of the bird itself and that makes it hard to detect it. There is reflection of light in its eye, though. Look closer and you will see them. :)

Thanks for all the comments.

Honest to God, I'm a newbie. A month ago, I didn't even know which lens to buy and ended up paying $400 for a Tamron 28-300 XR. Regretted it ever since. Quality of that lens was no where comparable to a Sigma 70-200mm EX HSM lens, not to mention Canon L series. Learned a lot from the articles from Photo.net. Still learning how to do portraits. Tried some but they came out bad (at least IMO). And I'll tell you a secret: that pic was the ONLY good one I picked out out of 600+ pics I took that day. :-D

If anyone can teach me how to be a better portrait photographer, I'll appreciate it very much. Thanks for reading.....

1 impressive picture within 600+ shot, that's not too bad at all for a beginner! Just keep shooting!!!

I like the fact that the background is recognizable but doesn't disturb the main subject. Very nice.
