Using complimentary colors generally makes for interesting photographs. Here, of course, it is the red/cyan and you have captured both very well. IMO the unusualness, the cut flower floating in water, gets more attention than the color contrast. It is a very interesting concept. Were it mine, I would crop severely on the bottom for the same reason I mention in the photograph of the rose, to increase the appearance of looking down on the subject matter. In your experimenting with color contrast, which I hope you will continue, you might find that it works best, or at least is easier for the viewer to recognize,  in photographs that are basically design—more abstract. I would say at first try working with subject matter that is basically flat, something without great depth. For example moving in very close to where you had only one or two pedals of the flower contrasted against the cyan background. Another technique that would probably have worked in an interesting way here would be having the flower ultra sharp—in other words, creating an intensified reality within a situation that is not very real, playing with the surrealistic qualities of the photographic medium in a very intentional way.
