tom lavin 0 Posted May 28, 2003 Oh boy, am I in hot water here. The response has been 100-0 in favor of this image, however........ I was in old Quebec about 30 years ago, but I remember it to be weathered with aged colors and textures. Your rendering of monotoned buildings conceals, rather than reveals that charm. If I'm wrong about the colorizing, I'll apologize ahead of time. It just looks so new and Disneylandish. On a positive note, the composition and construction is terrific - the light all going in the same direction, the layering is flawless, and the position of the clouds adds a crown to the whole image. However...... It would have been nice to have the whole steeple on top of the gold builing on the right. And the little triangle of blue to the left of the blue building is a bit of a distraction. And while you're at it, could you make the variation of brightness in the sky show thru the semi-transparent roof panels? It's a keeper and a fine image - no howevers about it. However, have you tried it in black and white? Link to comment

don_harper_the_edge 0 Posted May 29, 2003 I love the color saturation and composition. Just perfect use of diagonals. The glass panels really add realism to this photo. Very well done and thanks for sharing. Consider these comments helpful or rubbish as you see fit. Link to comment
gaetanchevalier 5 Posted May 29, 2003 Just to add that this is the first time that I see a composition like that of the Chateau Frontenac. Also Chateau Frontenac is in Quebec city in the old historical part of the city. I am quite sure that the blue part of the building in the lower left is the french ambassy. I will have to go there to confirm that. So congratulation again Jim for that exceptionnal picture of the Chateau. Link to comment

mg 0 Posted June 19, 2003 Hi, Jim. Well, I like it, but I'm not going crazy for it. Of course the subject is very interesting by itself, but photographically, I think this image need perspective correction to work at its best, and mostly, the angle doesn't do much for me. I find all a bit jammed together in an awkward way. You probably couldn't do much better than you did, as I imagine it would be very difficult to frame such a complex structure in the 1st place, but end of the day, a much higher camera position and perhaps a larger framing is what this image calls for, ideally, and imo.I am fairly amazed at the enthusiasm this picture raised, considering for example your drakar shot, which was imo a lot better, went almost unnoticed. Perhaps it's just me, but I feel such architectural shots need the perfect angle and correct perspetives, or end up ok to good, but not great. Best regards. Link to comment
sammm 0 Posted November 23, 2003 This is one of my favorites in your folder, and part of what I really like is the complexity of it. Strangely, I think that little bit of a blue dormer in the front is part of what makes it for me, both because I know that blue is often used in Quebec and because it adds significantly more depth to the photograph.
