robwilson 0 Posted September 14, 2011 This continues my series on tigers. The image is a couple of years old, but I've been looking for different ways of representing this most magnificent of animals. Thanks for any constructive feedback. Cheers Rob Link to comment
gungajim 75 Posted September 14, 2011 Rob, my only quibble with this series is that the black background you are using obscures the context in which it was taken. We are left to wonder if we are in a zoo, wildlife park or natural habitat. Detail on the tiger is superb. GJ Link to comment
robwilson 0 Posted September 14, 2011 Hi Jim,Thanks for the thought-provoking comment! The removal from the context is very deliberate. The pictures were taken in a zoo as sadly, I have neither the enormous amount of time, nor the money to go proper tiger hunting (in the photographic sense) for the length of time that it would take to get these images. The zoo background is also really dull, and I felt added little to the picture. This gallery contains some earlier, colour versions of several of these images, where the enclosure can be seen. What is more important, for me, than the enclosure being dull is the fact that having the enclosure in the picture gives clear indication that the tiger is a captive. I wanted to make these pictures about tigers, not captive tigers. I am not trying to be disingenuous by removing the context, I just wanted to focus on something very specific. jorge_fernandez3 1 Posted September 14, 2011 This image hits home as I visited our Zoo in Miami this Summer and One of the Tigers had die and the other seems sad! The one left is old and the Keeper told me they were trying to get more Tigers. This is a gorgeous image with a fantastic composition. Our Zoo is a replica of the one in San Diego and the Animals appear to be free with interesting habitats. Take good care. Link to comment
craig_rogers3 0 Posted September 14, 2011 Beautiful! DOF is perfect for me and I like the black background. For me, it was pretty obvious that this Tiger was in a zoo, however, the use of clever background does it for me.Fantastic capture of a fantastic and sadly endangoured animal.Craig Link to comment
robwilson 0 Posted September 14, 2011 Thank you all for your insightful, kind and useful feedback!Jorge, your image is heartbreaking. The zoo where are took these pictures has both positives and negatives. The negatives are the fact that the enclosure could be a bit bigger. It is a reasonable size compared to most zoos, but still not really enough. It is also a little rusty and worn out looking. However, on the positive side, the Siberian tigers, all nine or ten of them, are in excellent condition. They are clearly well cared for, and are, by a mile, the star attraction of this particular zoo. They are alert, inquisitive, and fit-looking. They are in far better shape than many of the other animals in the zoo.I am off to Nepal this winter holiday. Hopefully, I'll be lucky enough to photograph some wild tigers in Chitwan National Park - from a safe spot though!CheersRob Link to comment
