This is one of the first shots of my husband that came out well. I

find shooting friends and family difficult as they either goof on me

or are too stiff.

A nice dramatic photograph. The contrast suits the subject. A few problems: coin needs to be in focus (greater depth of field), hand holding the wand should not merge into the margin, perhaps more light on shadow side of face (this last point is arguable - however his expression does not seem sinister but friendly so I think more light would bring his face out of the darkness - if the magic effect were more dramatic (appearance of fire, etc.) then the shadow would be appropriate.

Thank you for the remarks. Actually, I considered each of these factors prior to composing the shot and choosing the F-stop. Had the coin been clearly in focus, it would have dominated the shot, and I wanted the magician to be the central subject--not his effect. Similarly, brining the entire wand into the shot distracted from the magician by creating yet another point of interest. Finally, as you note, placing more light on shadow side of face would have reduced the nice contrast. The point is not the effect, but the magician. Thanks again, though. Appreciate your thoughts.
