I don't think that I have used tyre tracks as a compositional element

before. Your comments are most welcome, thanks.

Very interesting, Jeff. Mars-like. You indeed used the tyre tracks well to anchor the composition, but I believe you would have been happier had they not been there. Am I right ? In such a case I would be tempted to include more of the "tree" to the right. A very cool shot, nevertheless.

Works very well with your previous abstrract on this subject, I see a folio in the making. I too really like the tracks, to me they put the aerial landscape into context. I give this a 6

Thanks for all the feedback, folks.

Peter, I suspect that I was unaware of the tracks at the time. I took over 240 shots in 40 minutes which must be a record for a photographer like me. Composing in a helicopter is a wonderful exercise, particularly in a place like this. I'm very happy with the tracks as they are. They just add another element to my way of thinking.

Very interesting work Jeff. The tire tracks define what we are seeing. If not for them, it would be truly abstract. It looks more like something from space, like a river delta, and I would assume that is what it is, just not as big as it appears. I once shot photos from a helicopter on may way to a rock concert, where I shot from backstage. I didn't get anything this good, but I did get a fairly close shot of Greg Almond, of the Almond Brothers, as he arrived. Your shot is much better than mine!!

Even though I know that those are vehicle tracks, they could just as easily be lines scribe into the oil in an abstract painting. The tracks impose an element of structure along with giving rise to an ambiguity which for me does more to add mystery than to define scale. Wonderful colour palette on this one.

Mark and Gordon, thanks. It was the ambiguity that made me choose this image to post. I felt that it was strong enough as an abstract but the tracks added the extra element to elevate it. I wish I could say that I deliberately included them at the time I took it but I can't.
