root 0 Posted May 21, 2003 4.0 avg? . . . hmmmm. Maybe the name of the diner is putting people off. Link to comment
marlene_degrood 0 Posted May 21, 2003 Hmmm....Carl, I happen to really like this kind of art. I like your composition and the black background. I think you put a lot more work into this than may be realized at first glance and that could account for the average ratings. You know "gee a simple snap of a sign....big deal". You did a very good job on this to create an image unique to the sign itself. Link to comment
root 0 Posted May 21, 2003 Thank you, Marlene. The 'work' is limited to framing the shot (hand held) to keep the left edge straight and leave a small amount of space between the upper part of the sign and the right side. The fun part is the exposure. Only 1/3 under turned the mid day blue sky very dark (upper right) because the sign is so reflective. Link to comment
jon_fernquest 0 Posted May 22, 2003 Excellent sharp detail of the neon tubes in the sign itself (which seems to be the subject of the photo, not the sign as a whole and what it says, I think people gave you low ratings because they naively thought you incorrectly cropped the sign so you couldn't read the whole of it). Beautiful grey and red also. Definite 7/7 for me. Link to comment
root 0 Posted May 22, 2003 Jon, you've got it. Sometimes it's discouraging to post a photograph and see people identify the 'subject' they recognize as opposed to the subject you want to show them. You're right, it's about the details of the neon tubing, mounting, framing, and, of course, the colors, not what the sign says - although I did include the whole word "American'. Glad to see a couple people enjoyed it. Link to comment
peter_daalder 0 Posted May 27, 2003 Definitely not a 7/7 for me, but I'm just going to enjoy letting my eyes travel along the lines in this one. Link to comment
laurentlacoste 0 Posted October 11, 2006 I really like this series very much. I must confess I'm a bit partial as I have a thing with colour, neon lights and design from the fifties and sixties. These colours are gorgeous. That combination of blue, white and red on black is a sight to see. Pure pleasure. Link to comment
