hi ian, according to my book (Joachim Haupt) it looks like a hover fly : chrysotoxum bicinctum. Beautiful insect, never seen it so far. An interesting picture.

Hi Ian,

A very interesting subject with nice inherent body l contrast , well captured.

The closet insert to these patterns  that I have seen is the Bumble Bee.
