It's unfortunate that the shot was taken with a background twig's shape following the lines of the birds beak!

Having said that, the two branches in the background could be easily taken completely out in post-processing, as with a help with a kick upwards to lift the mid-shadows. Shooting dark birds without some sort of light to fill the front always has the risk of almost silhouetting the bird. Just some points in trying to help you analysing future shots. best wishes ~ mike.
