This is a really classic framing method. I guess everybody uses it from time to time, I have, too. It works really well in your picture, because the 'frame' is so monochrome in color, contrasting the blue of the water and the colorful crowd so nicely. Good dof and the gondola is the icing on the cake. Maybe a little more crop on the dark top, nice picture - all the best, Claudia

this could also work in bw, eliminating colors generally helps concentrating on the framing and on the framed subject.
