We usually shoot flowers in their earliest most beautiful stage but

these roses had too much left to ignore. Kind of like wonderful aging

people. Comments are appreciated.

Hi Deanna,

This is a most beautiful composition .

Well shot.

I did increase the contrast on both the green buds and pink flowers a bit.

For me , it looks nice.

However, your original image is very easy to look at !

Best Regards,  Mike

Deanna, what i like most here would be the color of your single petal rose. it's just radiant, but does not go well with b/g colors, too similar in my opinion, especially bottom right. also think overall balance would be better if you had  included the three partially in/ partially out buds.

could also say the same with petal upper left corner, although it seems to work well as a pathway or pointer to main subject so guess it has a reason to be there.

i think when working with groups of flowers, or clumps, or how ever one describes them, it is similar to working on a group of people image. those buds would represent shoes or hands or just whatever.  i think the same principles apply to working with flowers. as when taking a portrait or a group shots.  it's important to not cut off limbs, top of heads, or things that throw the balance of image off.

its the same working with flowers, not always as easy to practice but worth making a effort when your creating your composition. am sure i could have better written what am trying to say, but hope you understand none the less. all the best........roger

The photo taken before this has the buds and I will send it here if I can remember how. It will be interesting to experiment with different b/gs but that is for another time. Thank you for helping me with this.

Actually I did shoot this pic with all buds showing but the focus was just a bit off so I opted for clarity. When I am in an editing mood and have more time changing the b/g will be interesting. I think a soft white b/g could create a dreamy effect. The existing natural b/g made up of colors of the same rose bush works for me but I understand your view and am sure I will like that too. Roger, thank you so much. You have made me pay more attention to details and options. Take care, Deanna

I like what you did to this pic and am amazed at all that can be done to it and still retain the soft look. When I looked at these flowers my thought was that they are faded but still pretty and the camera saw the color just right so no adjustment was made. My goal for the moment is to use my camera in a way that not much editing is needed and when my confidence grows in that area the sky is the limit with editing. You are such a help with advice on camera settings, etc. and now with editing too. Thank you Mike. Take care, Deanna

Tenderness about sums it up. Soft and faded are ok but tender works the best. Thank you for your thoughts. Take care, Deanna

Deanna, i find it interesting reading your comments on editing images.  to me there seems to be three type of images: in-house coming straight from the camera,  computer generated images, and the third category and most popular being a combination of the two.
guess i am old school as i tend to try and do everything required with my camera. if i take an image i am not pleased about i hit the delete button and send the image to the trash. a lot of folks can take that bad or average image to photoshop and create a wonderful piece of art.  that in my way of thinking is not exactly what i call photography.  i am not trying to devalue the infinite  amount of possibilities one has working with photoshop or other such editing programs.  i do however think there is a point somewhere where an image is no longer a photographic creation but falls into the realms of computer generated art.
there would be lots and lots of computer created images that i think are fantastic.  i just like to know which form i am viewing: a computer generated masterpiece or an image created by someone using the skills of a photographer. i know of nothing that has increased the possibilities of creativity more than photoshop, but i still like to think there are people out there who rely upon their own photographic skills in creating their art.  i think as time passes  there will be fewer and fewer photographers and more and more "artists" fitting into that third category. perhaps this is just a sign of the times.  i do know that learning how to be a photographer first most certainly  will not hurt you. you can give the best equipment to someone without a good eye and get ordinary results, while on the other hand you can give someone with a good eye terrible gear to use and still get terrific results. it's a funny old world we live in eh!

on looking at the three different images here your top and bottom image both radiate softness or as  Pierre says "tenderness" . in my opinion Mikes image loses that feeling by increasing the contrast, it  makes image appear more harsh. this is all of course just my opinion.........roger

boy, i sure can rattle on sometimes!

This is just my opinion - for what it is worth and although there are some admirable changes to this image. I still prefer your original one. I guess everyone is different and have their own way of looking at things. This is what makes art so subjective! I found your original image very soft and appealing, which for me is the essence of capturing rose images.

Best regards. Sarah
