Very nice work my friend!  My curiosity is now up.  I am going to be working with more overlays and such, have you tried to add an overlay, but make the overlay over the subject more opaque?  Seems to me if you can adjust the overlay over the subject different than the rest of the image, you could maintain some of the sharpness of the subject, but still get the overlay effect.  Just a thought.  Best regards...Brent
