Nice image. It works well for me as a contrast between the cold of a windy northern evening and the potential warmth locked up in the building for the the night.

The palm house was completed in 1896, a metal and glass cathedral

where the people of Liverpool could come and see exotic plants from

around the world.

During the Second World War the building was camouflaged in case the

glass reflected the moonlight and acted as a guide to bombers. During

the 1941 blitz a bomb fell nearby shattering all the glass and it

wasn't re-glazed until1950.

By the 1980's the palm house had badly deteriorated and had to be

closed on the grounds of safety. In the summer of 1992 a campaign was

started to have the palm house restored. Sponsorship and various

events were held to raise funds. The Palm House Preservation Trust and

the city council were brought together to work on a funding package.

By February 2000 £3.5 million had been raised. Construction was

started and completed in Sept 2001.

The building is now maintained by the Palm House Preservation Trust

who raise all their own income
