johnya 0 Posted May 21, 2011 People are always curious as to how I do this. This is actually not done with a regular camera, but rather a scanner. It is called scanography. I place the dandelion seed head on the scanner and keep varying the positions of the little umbrellas - the fluffy seeds - the trick is to kind of randomly place the seeds but yet in some kind of arrangement - then after about 30 different scans and many hours of work, I finally get two or three that I like. The process takes me all day which includes cleaning it up in photoshop. It takes hours of cleaning up the little dust particles by touching up little areas at a time using the healing brushes and erasers because if you try to use a universal filter such as despeckle or dust and scratches, it will also remove some of the fine details. SO after about 8 hours or so of work - from scanning to cleaning to cropping etc., you get a couple of these pieces. Link to comment
