Last Light (Best Large)

vincetylor

Taken in Poipu Kauai. The sun was down, but it seemed like there was one final burst of light. Used a tripod, cable release to catch some smoother, longer exposure action....(approx 20 seconds). Your opinions are always welcome and appreciated. www.hawaiianphotos.net

That strip of yellow is just a bit overpowering for me. Maybe you could tone it down a little, but then it might lose its impact.

Hey Vince, I'm usually both impressed by your work and grateful for the useful advice you have provided me in the past, but I'm having a hard time seeing the beauty in this one, In terms of quality, it goes without saying but Harmony seems lost here. It's almost as if the colors in the sky are unnatural, mainly because of the difference in tonal range from cloud to skyline and how sharp it changes. I agree with the previous comment regarding brilliance of the sunlight. Also, the foreground tone seems to be unaffected by brilliant atmosphere above, which is strange considering the long exposure used. Is this a natural production or did you indulge on the Hawaiian bud when adjusting the hue? Most importantly were you particularly happy this shot, if not why? Vince, don't take it personally, if we all just poured out compliments based on previous work and capability, we would be not be using this site to our advantage. Let me know

Thanks for ALL your comments. Cliff, to answer your question, yes I was VERY satisfied with this capture. You've heard the expression "there is more than one way to skin a cat", well there is more than one way to catch a sunset as well. In this case I wanted the movement of the water and clouds, contrasted with the stationary rocks. I used a Cokin sunset 1 (which is a very, very light filter) and that is all. Scott is right in that the yellow burst is what makes this work....whether people like it or not, that is what I was hoping to capture....and that is what was there. All I really did here was brighten it up a bit, and just more or less do some clean up. I am attaching the unedited original scan (which is never as sharp or bright or colorful as is the original slide itself). I certainly respect all opinions to like or dislike an image, but this was indeed what I saw that evening, and am grateful to have captured what I feel was it's true essence! ...Thanks again.

Hello Vincent:

Even without the clouds and yellow sky, it's an impressive scene. With them, it's perfection.

Very good colors and composition 'Ricky' ................ The lower half makes it for me .................... The motion blurred clouds in the top left is my only distraction ................. But, this is the effect you were trying to achieve - so there ! ......................... (-;

Maybe next time you can shoot an additional exposure with your SB-28 set to 3000 meters and freeze the clouds just a bit

Hey Ken can I barrow your Nikon sb-28, mine must be broken because I can't get it to light up the clouds 3000 meters away.

Oh I forgot -- You have to hot wire it with 'D' size batteries -- 6 of em' .................... and I was wrong about the 3000 meters -- it's yards .............................. (-;
