Actually it is indeed a stiking (pun not intended) compostion. The image compostion creates a lot of interest however you were dealing with what appears to be some very harsh lighting conditions. In direct light you which must have been near noon as the shadow is directly under the bird and the angle of the shot make a lot of back ground exposure bright and the bird like it was ring light losing some detail you may want to try to use AE exposre lock to reduce the exposure of exposre compensation to reduce the effect but most of the issue is natrue, great compostion and bad lighting.. I know as I have suffered much of the same shooting when compostions come the light is wrong. But over all I think you did well to keep the clarity and as much color to the bird as possible give the hard conditions... Wanted to provide these comments to at least bench mark a high average rate. I always try to explain when I can what my simple observation were... Again happy shooting and a real nice compostion...
