Just trying to post my first photo to this forum which is harder (for

someone as dumb about computers as me) than taking it. Would value

your views.

The composition is good. The bw tonality is soft but, to me, it’s softer than required. Considering the elements of the composition, I think, a bit more contrast is required. The background is beautiful and revealing. The main problem of the image is lack of sharpness. I personally want to see this image sharper so that the details of the ‘cases’ may reveal the age-old textures. Best regards.

Jim... I agree with Sumon on the major points, but I still find a very well presented shot that invokes a strong nostalgic feel... Good one... Mike

Thanks for your comments so far. I had been looking at the work of Polly Chandler and loved her partially defocused shots so used fair amount of front tilt on a 5x4 camera. I have wondered about uping the contrast and maybe printing a little darker generally so thanks for your input.

I can imagine this shot with more contrast (I quite often go heavy w/ the contrast)...and sharpness, but then...that would be another photograph altogether...one not necessarily better than the other...just different, with each possesing its own merit.   I love the shot "as is"...but I'd love to see a version with the changes that Sumon suggested.  This photograph goes straight to my favorites folder!

John Gaylon could have written my critique.  I cannot find fault with this. Everyone finds their own meaning or desire in a photograph.  I tend to analyze and ask questions.  I like that you've either intentionally or unintentionally given slightly more space on the left of your composition. With the cases facing slightly in that direction, it seems fitting.

I love the toning just as it is.  In my opinion, more contrast would ruin the feel. The tilted focal plane lends softness to a great deal of your image, it's that softness that I find appealing.  I would be proud to create a photograph this good.

Maurizio, thank you. 99%+ of what I do is film based rather that digital so yes I will post some more as soon as I get round to scanning some prints that will fit in my scanner.

I like this one as is because it has a nostalgic quality to it...gives me a sense of dreaming about where one has been or will be. Very nice photo. Thank you for sharing. :)
