Old Man and the Sea Montage

crosstone

Captain Ahab was shot with studio lights indoors, the ship's wheel was a borrowed prop. The horizon was shot near Pemaquid Point in Maine. The lighthouse up top is Portland Head. The seagulls were shot on Monhegan Island. The waves splashing onto the sea captain were shot in Acadia National Park. The clouds in the background behind captains head were shot at Rockport, Massachusetts. Good times!

Only needs some more cloning in order to remove the blue around the hand, otherwise interesting concept and well done image!

Peter,  This is a remarkable job of post processing - very well done indeed.   The following are just random thoughts.

It has been a long time since I read Hemmingway's book, but my memory is of a smaller boat, one that would not require such a ship's wheel.

It occurs to me that with your subject looking to picture right that he is making the viewer look out of the picture and possibly not return.  If the subject were looking toward picture left, his line of sight would traverse much of the space, and the viewer's eyes would follow.  There used to be an old composition rule that went something like "give the eyes the longer space to look through."

His body goes over the picture frame on the right.  I know that such things have been done to create the sensation that the person is outside the picture but interacting with it, but is that what you want here?

Regards,

Jerry
