Maybe he is thinking about a fish you might toss to him! The lighting and texture of his fur and his expression are really good.

excellent animal portrait: he almost seems human in a way. He has this wise, penetrating look in his eyes, yet seems to have the innocence of a child.

Besides what has been written i must add that it is a beautiful example of black and white tone range from all black to white and all in between!!

I will add to the praise about excellent tonal range and DOF. I'm not familiar enough with otters to make any further judgements on this image. To me, this animal appears to be quite small, so I am wondering whether or not it was such a good idea to crop so tightly on his head? I am really curious about what the rest of him looks like.
