Sorry for the late reply.

You make an interesting comment about the plasticine.

 

In a sense, all rock is plastic when it is involved as here in the 'ring of fire' that surrounds the great Pacific Basin, as it pushes out into surrounding land masses and pushes up on the lighter rock, which is what has happened here.

 

The rock literally acts over geologic time like 'plastic' though for brief periods it's very hot and suddenly spews lava and gases, then settles down.

 

You can literally read the history of Mt. Rainier's various eruptions and surrounding eruptions and uplifting events from this photo, which I find among its greatest strengths and appeals.
