I like the filter treatment giving it a painterly effect. The barn is centered with nothing else to balance it or add additional interest.

Ron,

Your barn is pretty much dead center.  An old rule of composition is "put your center of interest almost anywhere except dead center, because dead center deadens compositional interest.  If you do not happen to know about the rule of thirds you might want to look that up to get at least one idea about composition.

Very nice processing, but composition-wise, the barn is too centered. You could crop on the left and at the top.

having a quick peek in your portfolio, I'd bet you know rule of thirds (and even a bit more about compositions). So, I assume, you deliberately chose to put the barn dead center - yet, to be honest, I cannot quite decipher the purpose - lilke Claude, I can imagine, it might work even better if the gable end would be dead center.

But, putting composition aside, I really like your postprocessing - not only because it suits well to the subject and creates a very pleasant atmosphere (reminding of old master painters) but also because I like the artistic idea: it creates more 'distance' to the subject than a normal photo would do - it's less a cutout from a passed reality (like a photo) - just like a painting it could be an imaginery scene.

To center...or not to center, that is the question...or at least it seems to be regarding this photograph.  I would assume that everyone's advice is intended to be helpful...but anytime I hear words such as "should", "needs to be...", etc., there's the implication that there are definite rights and wrongs...and we know that's a fallacy.  As someone else said, I seriously doubt that Ron doesn't know or understand dthe rule of thirds...for whatever reason, he felt that centering the barn worked best for this picture.  I think it would be more helpful to point out what could be accomplised by not centering the barn...discuss the possibilities (as most have done) and leave it at that) Not trying to sound overly serious about the matter... :)   - John

p.s.- after saying all that...centering the barn doesn't work that well for me...lol

This is a very attractive picture. It gives a real sense of winter light. Rules not always enhance the beauty. To me this image is splendid the way it is.
