Fabiano,

I will comment only on the crop. That seems to be in contention. Raymond is quite correct to want to eliminate the large out of focus area on the left. An out of focus background draws attention to your subject. An out of focus foreground draws attention away from your subject. It appears Raymond chose his crop in part to use the rule of thirds in the placement of the subject's head. As a general rule, using the rule of thirds in a portrait can work well if there is something across from the subject to balance the composition. With nothing there it leaves the photograph quite left heavy.

I have left part of the foreground in to achieve a decent left and right compositional balance, even though it is somewhat annoying. Your subject should have more room in front of her than behind. This allows her to be facing into the picture, not out of it. You want to compositionally balance the left and right sides of the photograph. The compositional "rule" for this suggests that you position the tip of the subject's nose in the vertical center of the photograph. By positioning the tip of her nose in the vertical center of the photograph you not only have her facing into the picture, but you have good left and right compositional balance. This little rule almost always works well. At least it gives you a good starting point from which to subtly adjust your composition to make it visually balanced.

Nice shot,

Mark
