Very nice, indeed. This is a subject, that most people would, simply pass by. You managed, to make it very interesting. Congratulations!

It was a crazy unreal evening light just before a thunderstorm. The red ball and a little glance on the ball was hightlighted in the color with Corel-Photo Paint. Thanks to all that gave rankings to me - this inspires me to go on...

well well well what we have here? interesting but I can't say that it is plainly not the photo I have been waiting for the photo of the week.

Interesting photo, but the color of the ball is a bit too strong for me.. it looks artificial. Doesn't really matter if it is artificial or not, it's just a bit too strong. Perhaps toning it down a bit in photoshop or otherwise might make this work better? Or perhaps this would be better in b/w?

Otherwise, this is my kind of photo: line, surface structure, sky, and not much else. Beautiful!

This is a very interesting photo. I like the long converging lines of the field and how they dissappear into the trees. The pipe provides a pleasing distraction from the otherwise perfectly paralell lines. The little notch in the treeline also gives the shot nice direction and accentuates the depth. The sky is just awesome, I can almost smell the rain myself. Even though I don't know what exactly this photo is of, I know that during the summer I must see similar scenes hundreds of times here in New England. Still, I have never seen a photo like this and that's why I really like this shot. The one thing I don't like is the red light or whatever it is. Its too bright and too round, it looks fake. IMHO, It would look better if it were a slightly flared star instead of a glowing orb. I'd actually like to see this shot pre-Corel. Other than that, a very well captured moment, congrats Rainer.

The red ball draws my attention to it and away from the rest of the photo. If you tone down the red ball, then this is a fabulous photo.

Not that I mind a touch or two from photoshop, but blur of the top part/sharpening of the bottom seems way too apparent to me. Excellent at the first glance, but loses it at closer inspection...

Lower left to upper right diagonal.

Foreground, light sky, dark sky. Now I wonder, just what is this textbook composition missing... A red thing on the intersection of the thirds perhaps? Ta daaa!

As it happens, I was looking over and enjoying your photo.net folders just a couple of days ago. It's a very impressive assembly of photographs and I think the elves could have found well over a dozen better ones than what has been selected here. It's not a bad shot, but the colours are a bit drab and the contrasts not particulalry dynamic. Also, the glowing ball is a little much (perhaps it could be toned down a little) and, although it does work visually and in terms of balance/composition, it makes little sense conceptually. You have done well in seeing and shooting what was there, but I have to say you've managed to find and capture far more interesting subjects in your other pictures. I am completely mystified at what goes on in the minds of the elves, to the point that I'm starting to think they must be motorcyclists or something.

I hope you get another POW in the future for one of your many deserving efforts. Keep up the good work.

Reminds me of my childhood. I don't mind the red ball at all and actually it reminds me of an old Dead Milkmen song ("Stuart" I do believe) where it is purported that the U.S. government is building landing strips in Iowa for "gay martians." Good job.

I would have to say it looks better with the reduction but, I still don't like it. What is it? Is it a light? People keep calling it a ball, why is it blurry?

I find this rather dull, actually. Technically, this is a fine photo and makes excellent use of hyperfocal techniques (whether intentional or not). But the subject and compostion are, frankly ... blah.

A human element would help. A more dramatic sky would help. Some plant life would help.

It's just, well ... bland.

I agree with the elves on this photo, this is good photo, simple but dramatic, most would have walk past and not seen the photo, the lighting and composition are the key factors, why should this not be picked for (pow)he may have better photo`s in his folder, but this one stands out for its simplicity. Well done.

I agree that there are terific photos in the folders, but I think this is one of the most striking and original. I like it better with the red toned down as I think it maintains a slightly surreal element that isn't too manipulated-looking. It doesn't bother me that I don't know what it is. You composition is excellent. The gloominess is pervading and could be too much, but it is saved by that red thing and the thin strip of green grass below the trees. I would leave it in color for that reason.

The photograph is very nice. The angle is wonderful and the tall trees in the background do well to fill in what might otherwise be a scene lacking drama and oomph.

Only two things to add:

1: The end of the field, whether following soil to grass, soil to soil, or just the tree line, makes me feel a bit off balance.

2: The image seems a little underexposed, and could use a bit more depth of field as the the waterline is the subject. By that I am referring to the texture of the waterline dying off too early.

Otherwise...Congratulations! This is a very nice scene.

The field rows add a strong perspective and the shiny metal pipe against the dull dirt gives a nice contrast of textures. I am sure that the sky and the atmosphere were much more dramatic than what the picture shows. I agree with another person earlier that it could be exposed a bit longer to give the background and sky more depth cause right now they are basicaly a silhouette. The pipe and the dirt are perfect though, you might want to do some darkroom work on it. I am really impressed that you got that from a 800 asa film! Was that the actual aperture used for this pic (2.8)? I am a big fuji fan because it does well with nature colors (esp. greens) but it doesn't look like it did any better than a kodak (yellowish) film in this case. It might be the fault of your print developer though. Have you given color slide film a try? It might help you achieve more vibrant colors, but the scanners aren't cheap. Great shot, I Like it a lot, even if it is a bit bland. The subject matter (dirt) IS dull and the sprinkler pipe pierces it very nicely. You shouldn't feel that you have to spruce it up with a red ball to make it better. I think it would be fine without the spray-plane landing light.

Gorgeous image. The converging lines are mesmerizing. The detail of the dirt grains gives the picture a strong sense of reality, while the altered red glow gives it a feeling of being unnatural. nice mix. also, it's perfect how the top of the pole meets the grass/dirt line.

I won't bother talking about the sky since everyone else has already said how nice it was.

The only thing I can't decide is if it would look nicer with a larger depth of field... if we could see more details in the trees and the distance in general.

Beauty.

After 2 technically excellent POW that were bland, blah, uninterersting pictures of a motorcycle and a bird (yawn), this is a refreshing choice. Good perceptive eye, and a well done, compelling image.

I am giving the picture, the original one 10's in both categories to compensate for the poor individuals that cannot see this picture for what is is. I think the bright red ball is great and is what makes the picture.

What a wonderful compliment to have people say your image looks like it was done in Photoshop. As for the digital enhancing of the red ball, that could have been accomplished in the field with a bit of subdued flash. Maybe an inspirational adage for the New Millennium should be "try to take photographs that are so good they look like they were done in Photoshop!"
