Very different from the usual fare we encounter on Photo.net.  This one combines imagination, unusual camera angle, excellent use of the wide angle lens to emphasize the ring and string of beads, and inclusion of the cane which speaks to his physical condition.  Positioning of the chair gives us a snapshot (sorry, pun) of his surroundings for context. With everything in place you hit him with the punch line to the joke I imagine you were in the process of telling him when you were setting up.  That was the 'coupe de gráce',  the element that elevates this shot to the highest plateaus  from those of the  'also rans'.  Masterly!  Now, if you can repeat this enough times................................. :-)  My bias for B&W presentation of people photos puts icing on this piece of cake for me.  I think it was the Canadian photographer, Freeman Patterson, who once said "....the camera looks both ways..."  so, for me, this shot speaks volumes in your favour.  Best of the season to you.  I hope to continue these dialogues in 2011.  Best, LM.

A wonderful portrait filled with personality, bravo.

Wishing you the best season's greetings and a New Year filled with joy and happiness.  John

REally makes me smile and even want to laugh because his expression is terrific!  The perspective or angle creates an impression of looking at an rising ocean wave, and then there is that expression -- the climax!  Interesting that he smiles amidst a lot of cracked stones, yet he looks well put together.  I wonder about the beads.  Anyway, happy and fun holidays to you!
