This might work very well as an editorial shot, but as a portrait ...

There is little detail in the skin highlights.

Be careful of foreshortening. Watch for anything closer to the camera than the body. If nearer the camera than her body her feet, knees, hands, elbows and shoulders will look out of proportion to the rest of the body -- larger than normal -- foreshortened.

You have focused well on her eyes. Your depth of field is not great enough to include her hands. I don't see a good reason to have any of her out of focus. An out of focus background is very nice and focuses attention on your subject. Parts of your subject out of focus will draw attention away from what is in focus. It is difficult to go wrong with having the entire subject in focus.

Her expression is not very pleasant.

She has good catchlights. I really like this as an editorial type photograph. It all depends on its purpose.

After scrolling through all of the portraits in the list I kept coming back to this one. While I appreciate Mark's evaluation of the image, I feel quite differently about it. Any time an image jumps out from the crowd as this did, I find it is usually worth examaning.

I think the texture surrounding her, both on the walls and floor, really enhance the subject. They complement her cloths and hair very well, and even her sitting position. The loss of detail on her arm and hand don't bother me as they do Mark, because they fit the stark nature of the portrait. To me, much of the portrait's impact comes from the stark, no frills light that we imagine coming from a window to her right. I love the strong lead into the subject's face provided by her arms, and the foreshortening Mark talks about I feel adds to the image by making her seem distant and more isolated. Her expression is cool and aloof, and that foreshortening enhances that feeling for me. She has a thousand yard stare that goes right through the viewer. The hands, large and thrust into our space, give me the feeling she isn't timid about who she is or how she feels. The composition, to my eyes, is very dynamic, and would suffer from a more standard portrait pose.

In part, your portrait stands out because it breaks standard rules. but more importantly, in doing so it takes full advantage of the possibilities this allows. I think it is a wonderful and most memorable portrait - one I would would be very happy to have made. Of course, that's what makes photography so interesting - every one has a different take on each image, and if they generate discussion, they must be doing something right. Thanks for sharing it -

Very interesting portrait. I like it for the emotional charge in it and the intese contrast. Good job!!

I like this picture, it goes against what I would naturally do when I am shooting someone (Straight onto the camera) But you made it work in my opinion.  I really like this shot.  Great job.  I like the lighting. Her hair seems to say "different" or not going with the flow of life, which I am thinking why it balances out her hands being in the forground, something I dont think I would normally like in too many photos. 

Very raw it fits her face.  It's good.  Best, D
