Beneath the Waves

michael anderson

A lone starfish shines in the late afternoon light of Tsoi Lik lagoon, Papua New Guinea. The Tsoi Islands are a secret South Pacific paradise with spectacular white sand beaches surrounding a stunning turquise lagoon. A large tropical tree overhangs the lagoon in this spot and the late afternoon sun was filtered through the branches for a few minutes each day, providing a dramatic backdrop of light rays that danced from one colorful starfish to the next.

A fascinatiing underwater image, Michael. I wonder - were the rays so sharp ? Maybe they were illuminating some floating particles. The fish silhouette provides an interesting balance to the one on the left. Well done. Best regards. Peter

Dear Michael, the light of the upper half of this photo is unique. The sun rays shine through the water like a submarine aurora, the waves look like the clouds of an approaching thunderstorm and the bright and dark fishes stand out in front of the respective backgrounds. No doubt this is the handwriting of an exceptional master of light.

All of this is just the backdrop of a perfectly located colorful starfish which unfortunately lacks the brilliance and surrounding to equal the quality of the upper half.

What about merging two shots from the same location, one focusing on the foreground and the other with the background as you have. Or would your principles not allow this kind of manipulation?

Best regards. Karl

Spectacular shot.  I love the light and the fish in the background that seem to be in no hurry to just float on by.  The light seems to shine right on the star, very nice.
