Truly a stunning experience standing out in a partially frozen river

at night, in complete darkness, witnessing natures finest lightshow.

I never shoot the aurora just focusing on the aurora. I always take

pride in doing these in the same way i do normal landscapes. My goal

is to take aurorashots that would have value even without the aurora.

For this shot i covered the sky for the majority of the exposure (126

sec) and then revealing the sky for the last 20 secs. This made the

foreground just as good as the sky.

This may very well be my own personal favourite amongst all my shots...

Hope you like it!

Amazing clear and detailed night shot!

Love the composition and wide view angle.

But the colors and light are amazing too!

Thanks for sharing :)

Your approach to make a photo that would be worthy even without the aurora in it has paid off 100%. Very beautiful sight!

This is absolutely one of the best images of the aurora I have ever seen. Perfect balance between the aroura and the landscape. Great detail in the rocks and plants in the foreground. Well balanced composition. Wow. A night to remember, yes, but truly an image to remember!

Really beautiful image. I love that the image is not just of aurora (which is magnificient) but of a wonderful lanscape as well. The reflection makes is particularly special. 7

I typically do not find aurora shots very compelling. I think it is because, as you stated, the majority of aurora shots feature the sky and the rest of the scene goes black or near black. Too often, because of the lengthy exposure time, the majority of aurora shots are also soft or out of focus because of subtle camera vibration. To the contrary for this image! The landscape is compelling enough, but add the aurora and it's reflection, and you have pushed the envelope, providing a refreshing and unique perspective. Truly remarkable!!

Dear Arild,

contrasts between foreground and background are fabulous here. This scenery is superb. Excellent! Vote 7.
