Lili and Candle

glen_dimock

One of my first images with Canon's small S45 digicam, 1/2 sec exposure with a pocket tripod and a very patient cat. I'm not sure if the luminosity is good -- comments?

I'm wondering what other people think of the cropping/composition.

Would it look better cropped square, losing all of the empty space

on the left? The heads might look better off-center.

Also, is more Photoshopping needed? This is a white cat, but the

candle glow and white balance setting on my camera made her look a

bit (too?) yellow.

This is a greattt shot! I really like it... the shadows... the lighting, very nice! I wish I can take a picture of my dog with his "artistic position"... *sigh* he is always trying to run away from me everytime I hold my camera, probably he thinks I am holding a gun or something ha ha ha... good job, and I agree, great cat! :)

I think the color of Lili works well - she has a pleasing soft glow. I like the way you have her framed here as well, and don't think cropping it would add much. My only suggestion is that the candle feels a bit busy. This picture is captivating because of Lili's expression and the two very different views of her face, and I think the motion and multiple colors of the candle's glass may detract from the quiet contimplation of the cat.

I think its a great picture and sets a very peaceful mood - it makes me happy!

I think the crop is good the way it is. The empty space on either side even the photo out. I think a square crop would take away from the lighting effect. Very good photo. Very well done. Good colors and originality.

Nice composition, good choice of contrasting colors in the candle and great lighting to express a mood of innocence and curiosity. Love it!

Cats, being mysterious critters, seem to "just appear" and then do something crazy and disappear again. What you have captured here is the essence of that mysterious cat behavior. If viewers know anything of cats, they know the next act in this little play will be the cat carefully sniffing the top of the candle, getting a touch of the heat and scurrying away again into that dark corner to glare at the human who put such a thing in her Empire. The dark region on the left contributes too much to the feeling of the photo to crop it out.

This is simply a masterful work of art. Not a bad cat either and she doesn't look a bit "yellowed."
